So I know, I know this post isn’t about fashion BUT I like to throw a little entertainment in every once and a while and this just HAD to make the cut. Last night I was lucky enough to have attended a pre-screening for Straight Outta Compton, a music biopic that hit the nail on the head!
Surrounding the grow up, and (excuse my slang) but the glo up of Comtpon rappers now known as NWA one of the greatest and most influential rap groups of possibly ever; Eazy E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella, with of course cameos by Suge Knight, Snoop Dogg and 2 Pac; well their characters.
The movie is like any other musician’s story; Ray, Walk The Line only in my opinion a lot more interesting, a lot more cursing and very real life LA. N.W.A is credited with the birth of gangsta rap. The film chronicles a decade of the groups rise to fame, the good, the bad, the ugly and the very real. At 2 and half hours long my eyes were glued to the screen the entire time. From the parties and shows to diss tracks and deaths, they didn’t leave out a thing!
If you’re not a hip hop fan and I mean a real hip hop fan then perhaps this movie isn’t for you, but I’m sure you’ve all bumped Boyz In The Hood at least once, say it with me; “Cruisin down the street in my 64”. I’ll be honest in saying I’m not completely sure there will be any Oscar winners from Straight Outta Compton but the film itself was wonderfully executed. Ice Cube even went as far as casting his own son to play him and believe me when I say he’s got his dad’s scowl down pact! (Ice Cube produced the film)
The movie shows what life in Compton back in the 80’s was like and they do so beautifully and accurately. As I was watching the film I definitely connected with the characters, feeling for them in many situations, and I promise that’s not because I’m a hip hop fan. I really could go on and on but I’m going to cut it here and leave you with a JUST GO SEE THE MOVIE!!
