Modern Mean Girl Fashion ; The Plaid Skirt

The other night I was watching the classic movie, The Heathers and although the movie itself was seriously funny I couldn’t help but look at the fashion.  One thing became extremely clear to me; all of the classic mean girl movies have the same look! Take The Heathers, Clueless, The Craft and even Gossip Girl the look is almost always the same even throughout the time differences.  It’s always a plaid skirt of some sort, a heel or flat, blazers, crop tops and/or sweaters.

I wanted to take some time to recreate the classic Mean Girl look and to make it a little edgy for the modern day It Girl.  I created 2 looks with sweaters, 2 with crop tops and 1 with a blazer! If you’re interested in seeing my recreations then keep reading!

The look above was giving me complete Dionne from Clueless vibes! The skirt is from Romwe.com and is paired with a Maroon turtleneck sweater by A.L.C.  I threw on a quilted Chanel Backpack and these eye-catching Aquazzura’s Fauna boots.  A red Dior lip and this metal chain choker tie the look together for  modern and still classic mean girl look!

This look is one I’m dying for! The plaid skirt is from Landsend.com and the high waist over the knee style is total 90’s school girl.  Throw on a cream cable knit sweater like the one above by Harvey Nichols.  These Gucci inspired ankle boots are a total dress up to the look.  A simple watch with a Maroon band brings out the red in the plaid skirt.  With a red lip and an oversized cat eye sunglass you’re instantly out of 90’s movie The Craft.

If your favorite Clueless character was Brittany Murphy’s Ty then this look is perfect for you! The Chicwish asymmetric Tweed skirt is perfect for a summer day and paired with the simple sleeveless cotton Blue cropped tank the skirt will definitely be center stage until you get down to the shoes.  These Blue Sparkle Platforms by Stella McCartney are killer and totally give this 90’s Mean Girl look a modern twist.  Throw on a white skinny choker, this suede Chloe cross body and these funky round sunglasses and this look is certainly “Ty’d” together.

Now this look is one I would totally wear! And I think I could see Jenny Humphrey in it too. Post Blair Queendom that is.  This funky giant plaid Barbara Bui mini skirt is perfect for every season.  I decided to pair it with a Red cotton sleeveless crop top and throw on the Rag & Bone Denim jacket with Stud detail.  This black Gianvito Rossi Suede ankle boot is everything and adds to the Rocker school girl feel. Grab a Silver watch and this Killer Dionysus Gucci bag to complete this look.

This last look is giving me major Heather, Blair Waldorf vibes! If you know me you know I love a good Blair Waldorf look. This Burberry Brit Plaid skirt is everything, I just love the way it falls.  Throw on a Pussybow blouse and this Balmain Double Button Blazer to pull it together. Blair would definitely do a flat but to pull it to a more modern feel I say pair it with a boot like this Knee High Ayla boot above from the Kendal-Kylie collection. This Nixon watch is a casual add and the Longchamp Penelope Tote is perfect for your agenda and other everyday needs.  A nude lippie finishes the look and if you want to give full on Blair vibes don’t forget to grab your headband!

If you’re into my Modern Day Mean Girl looks then let me know which was your favorite and how you’d style them!
